Countdown to the CIS championships

(Halifax, NS)-The countdown is on! Dalhousie University is proud to be hosting the 2005 Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) Men's and Women's Cross Country championships on November 12. Coming off last season's national team gold medal for the women's team, individual silver medallist Janice Ashworth will lead a strong but rebuilding team for 2005. But, head coach Dan Hennigar predicts this season as the best in years for his men's squad.

"The men's team is going for the national podium, no doubt about it," says Hennigar. Narrowly missing the medals the last two years with team fourth- and fifth-place finishes, Kingston, ON native Paul Chafe will lead a strong Dalhousie team looking to medal for the first time since taking bronze in 1978. "It will be very interesting," predicts Hennigar.

Other Tigers to watch include Chafe's running-mate Matt Sheffield and conference all-stars Chris Algar and Nicholas McBride as well as last season's track and field rookie of the year, John Corbit. MUN transfer Robert Jewer is also expected to be a contender. One the women's side, Ashworth will be joined by only one remaining member of last season's championship team, Caroline McInnes. Stepping up are Ellen Vessie, Janie Astephen and StFX transfer Shauna Wilcox.

The Tigers will compete at all four conference meets as well as maintain a busy out-of-conference schedule to prepare for the tough road to the championships. Dalhousie opens their season with a conference meet at UdeM this weekend.

Dalhousie University is hosting the 2005 CIS Men's and Women's Cross Country championships for the first time since 1993. The event is set for November 12 at Point Pleasant Park in Halifax, NS. Last season was the best-ever for Dalhousie's cross country program as head coach Dan Hennigar led the women's squad to a CIS team gold medal. The men's Tigers are the strongest and most experienced team in years and are looking to reach the CIS podium for the first time since winning bronze in 1978.
