Blasting from the past
Halifax, NS -Université de Moncton's cross country roster has just increased in average age! Despite having her 49th birthday next week, Patty Blanchard's story isn't one of nostalgia and participation; she's out to win and is a serious contender at that. Blanchard has been making waves on the master's circuit and most recently took home a bronze and silver at the World Master's Athletics Championships in San Sebastian, Spain in the 5000m and 1500m, respectively. "Patty has been a top women's runner in the region for a really long time," says Dalhousie cross country head coach, Dan Hennigar. "Everyone that I've talked to is so supportive and excited to see her back in the AUS. She'll give the younger runners a scare," predicts Hennigar. To say Blanchard has been around for a really long time doesn't even cut it. She raced to a bronze medal finish at the inaugural CIS Women's Cross Country championship in 1980 and followed that performance with a fourth-place finish a year later. These results made her a two-time all-Canadian before two-time silver medallist from Dalhousie, Janice Ashworth, was even born. Blanchard is studying in a BEd. Certificate program at the Université de Moncton. Dalhousie University is hosting the 2005 CIS Men's and Women's Cross Country championships for the first time since 1993. The event is set for November 12 at Point Pleasant Park in Halifax, NS. Last season was the best-ever for Dalhousie's cross country program as head coach Dan Hennigar led the women's squad to a CIS team gold medal. The men's Tigers are the strongest and most experienced team in years and are looking to reach the CIS podium for the first time since winning bronze in 1978. Stay tuned to the championship website for more information: http://cisport.ca/e/championships/cross_country/2005/index.cfm Come out and cheer on the Tigers!
