HALIFAX (CIS) The University of Guelph Gryphons women and University of Windsor Lancers men captured the team titles at the 2005 CIS cross country championships hosted by Dalhousie University at Point Pleasant Park.

The team banner was the first since 1997 and the second in history for the Gryphons, while the Lancers were crowned for the third consecutive season.

Beth Wightman (Unionville, Ont.) of the University of Toronto finished the women's five-kilometre race in a time of 16 minutes and 44 seconds to claim her third career individual gold medal. Wightman had posted first-place finishes in 2003 and 2001 as a member of the Queen's Golden Gaels.

Three-time AUS champion Janice Ashworth (Dunrobin, Ont.) had to settle for silver for the third time in as many CIS championship appearances, crossing the finish line 26 seconds behind Wightman (17:10). Laura Moulton was the top finisher for the national champion Gryphons, earning the third spot on the podium with a time of 17:13.00.

Kelsey Daley of Saint Mary's was the top female rookie finishing 23rd (18:05.00).

Of note, 48-year-old Patty Blanchard of the Moncton Aigles Bleues, competing against runners 25 years younger, finished 11th (17:42.00) earning second-team all-Canadian status. Blanchard was a bronze medallist at the first-ever CIS women's cross country championship in 1980.

The Toronto Varsity Blues (119 points) and Victoria Vikes (136 points) placed second and third behind Guelph (113 points) in women's team rankings, respectively.

On the men's side, Windsor's Cristiano Mauricio (Leamington, Ont.) stopped the clock at 30:16.00 at the end of the 10-kilometre race to capture his second straight individual title. The Lancer held a 20-second lead over Waterloo's Scott Arnald (30:36) when he crossed the finish line, while Paul Chafe (Kingston, Ont.) of Dalhousie followed in third place in a time of 30:42.00.

The top male freshman was Victoria's Daniel Mallie, 16th in 31:28.00.

Guelph (65 points) and the Victoria Vikes (111 points) rounded out the podium behind Windsor (54 points).
