Dalhousie claim AUS Title

HALIFAX, N.S. - Dalhousie University (Dal) hosted the 2007 Atlantic University Sport Cross Country Championships today in Point Pleasant Park and reclaimed the AUS men's banner from 2005-06 with third year pharmacy student, Russell Christie (32.19.82) leading the way for the Tigers with a second place individual finish.

The seven women's teams started the day at 12:00pm, with St. Francis
Xavier University (StFX) earning the conference title for the third year
in a row with 21 points. Dal finished the race in second with 53 points
and St. Mary's University (SMU) with 86 points earned a third place
finish. The men's race saw six teams on the starting line at 12:45pm
with Dal taking first place with 28 points, StFX finishing in second
place with 37 points and Memorial University (MUN) coming in third with
75 points.

For the women's team win, StFX had six of the top 10 female runners
including Monika Prieboschova of the Czech Republic (17.56.10), Gina
Stewart, a third year runner from Antigonish, NS (18.15.65) and Robyn
Erickson a fourth year Arts student from Bedford, NS (18.19.93)
finishing first, third and fourth respectively. The top runners for Dal
were 2006-07 AUS Champion, Caroline McInnes (18.23.63) who finished
fifth and Ellen Vessie, a fifth year medical student (18.41.05) who came
in eighth. SMU was led by Kelsey Daley, a third year science student
from Fredericton, NB who finished in second place with a time of 18:03.76.

Helping Dal's Christie claim the win was rookie Peter Corrigan
(32.27.03) who finished third. The StFX charge was led by Czech Republic
native, David Gerych who earned the individual win with a time of
31:49.96. Stephen Shears (34:09:10) was the top finisher for MUN coming
in 11^th overall.

Dalhousie recently capped another successful varsity season. Kicking
off 2007-08, 62 student-athletes were recognized as academic
all-Canadians. Throughout the season, outstanding efforts by all 14
varsity teams resulted in five Atlantic University Sport (AUS)
championship wins with three athletes being recognized as AUS most
valuable players and eight as Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) first
team all-Canadians. Three coaches were named AUS coach of the year with
one taking the honour at the CIS level. Also at the national level,
Dalhousie collected three CIS all-rookie team awards, one CIS libero of
the year nod and three outstanding student-athletes were recognized with
the CIS student-athlete community service award. In May 2007 Jeff Weiler
and Leanne Huck were the conference nominees for CIS male and female
athlete of the year at the annual BLG awards in Calgary, Alta. /
