Gryphons ready to defend OUA Title at Cross Country Championships

LONDON, Ont. - Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Cross-Country Championship is to be hosted by the University of Western Ontario on Saturday, October 27, 2007 at the Thames Valley Golf Course in London, Ont.

The women's 5km race will start at 11:00 a.m. and the men's 10km event will begin at 11:45 a.m.

The Guelph Gryphons men's and women's team enter the Championship as the number one ranked team in the CIS Top Ten rankings this week.

A renowned cross-country program, the Gryphons runners have a decorated history at the provincial and national levels. The men's team has won eight straight OUA banners, while the women have won four consecutive titles.

Last season, the Gryphons claimed a double gold at the 2006 CIS national championships in Quebec City, capturing both team banners for the first time in school history. The last time a team accomplished such a feat was in 1994 when the University of Victoria earned the dual victory.

Running on the men's side are three past OUA Rookies of the Years including Kyle Boorsma (Guelph, Ont), Matt Brunsting (Stirling, Ont) and Andre-Paul Baillargeon-Smith (St. Catherines, Ont). Joe Brunsting (Stirling, Ont), Matt's identical twin brother and Boorsma were the top Gryphon finishers on the championship course in the Western international earlier this season. These four runners will lead Guelph as they look to capture their ninth straight OUA banner.

In the women's competition look for National Junior team members Lindsay Carson (Cambridge, Ont) and Rachel Cliff (Vancouver, BC) to lead the team. Carson's enjoyed a phenomenal season winning the Guelph Open and finishing second at the Stanford and Penn State NCAA races. Cliff was the 2006 OUA Rookie of the Year and has put out another impressive season as she strives to improve on her fourth place finish at last year's OUA championship.
